Pernod Ricard Moçambique celebrates the profile given to economic activity in the country, following international recognition of the “Mercado de Frango e Magumba”. Located by the sea, this market stands out for its gastronomy rich in seafood. The company believed in and invested in the project, which is now remarkable for the reused containers that make up the space with art and modernity. Sustainability was the cornerstone of the design and construction of this market, which earned it an international award from the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, FIDIC, in Singapore, at its Project Awards 2023.

Pernod Ricard has played an active role in supporting local communities, contributing to the socioeconomic development of Mozambique. The aim now is to help formalise informal vendors, providing them with more dignified conditions in which to carry out their economic activities. The project, managed by Vedor, an architecture and urban planning firm, came about in response to the challenge issued by the Maputo Municipal Council, which was seeking to rehouse the chicken sellers who had been displaced because of the precarious state of their previous infrastructure and the preventive measures put in place during the covid-19 pandemic.

The Mercado de Frango e Magumba, with its artistic containers, is home to 209 vendors and 100 kiosks, making it a relaxing and attractive place on the Marginal, generating income and livelihoods for many families. Francisco Júnior, Managing Director of Pernod Ricard Moçambique, said that supporting the market is a source of pride, both for the social value it provides and for the international recognition it has received.

Bruno Vedor, Director of Vedor and head of the project, expressed his enthusiasm about the FIDIC award, stressing that it is recognition of the collaborative work between the municipality and the business sector. For Vedor, such an international distinction confirms the quality and standard of its work on the global stage.

The criteria for awarding the prize to the “Mercado de Frango e Magumba” included the promotion of social, economic and environmental quality of life. The market stood out among 30 international projects, winning the juries’ “highly commended prize”. FIDIC, founded in 1913, promotes the interests of the consulting engineering industry and highlights the role of projects such as the “Mercado de Frango e Magumba” in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
