Praça da OMM is one of the most emblematic squares in the Mozambican capital, fitting the pattern of those that glorify significant episodes, figures and organisations in the country’s history.

Located in the Bairro da Coop, in the middle of a roundabout, this place is intended to pay tribute to the Mozambican Women’s Organisation, founded in 1973, during the struggle for Mozambique’s independence, in recognition of the growing role of women and seeking to promote their emancipation. The OMM still exists and is active today, holding some of its celebrations in the square.

In the middle of the square stands an imposing work of art produced by the renowned Mozambican artist Naguib, inspired by Mozambican women, their customs and ways of life. In fact, there are eleven figures, ten of them in sheet metal, surrounding a majestic statue of a woman holding a child in her arms. This reinforced concrete structure, covered in mosaic and tiles, is 7.5 metres high and weighs approximately 4 tonnes, and can be viewed through 360 degrees.

The square, which underwent refurbishment works years ago to improve the whole infrastructure, continues to deserve great and constant attention to protect it from the frequent collisions caused by motorists who drive around it every day.
