Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah is a powerful biographical political drama that revisits the assassination of the activist Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), at the time very influential within the Black community. He was also the leader of the popular Black Panthers movement, the most important Black collective in the United States in the 1960s. Hampton had a short but very intense life before being shot dead by the Chicago police in a violent raid on his home. He was much hated by J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen), the serving director of the FBI, who by no means wanted the movement to gain greater prominence. At a certain point, the federal agency recruits Bill O'Neill (LaKeith Stanfield), an unknown Black man, placing him in the organisation as an undercover agent, who becomes caught up in a dangerous double game and ends up being the reason for the film's biblical title. If one is the Black messiah, the other is Judas, because of the way he betrays the group and its leader.

With the aim of showing the public who the Black Panthers were and what ideals they stood for, the director, Shaka King, opens the film using real recordings. Bold, this production makes many references to historical situations of the period it covers and to some important figures. It features notable performances from a superb cast, excellent art direction, good cinematography and an enviable soundtrack, ingredients that helped this film win several international awards, including the Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song at the 2021 ceremony.
