Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) and the telecommunications company Tmcel, two giants of Mozambican industry, are in trouble. The alarm was raised by Mozambique's Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, in a worrying speech to parliament. Both companies face imminent financial collapse unless urgent recovery measures are implemented.
LAM, our flag carrier, is going through moments of tension. With a loss of 75 million dollars in 2022 and a pricing policy considered "elitist", the company is heading for a financial precipice. The situation is so grave that drastic possibilities such as liquidation, controlled bankruptcy or privatisation are being raised. However, the government is not standing idly by and is betting on a joint management arrangement with South Africa's Fly Modern Arc, in an attempt to stabilise the situation.
Tmcel, for its part, faces the risk of "collapse" owing to the decline in its operations. The company has accumulated debts of around 400 million dollars and has lost the ability to honour its commitments, including the payment of salaries. Its market share has shrunk and its equipment has become obsolete in the face of the competition.
As a solution, it is suggested that more than 80% of Tmcel's assets be sold, staff be reduced and the debt be taken on by the State. The idea is to make the company attractive to a strategic partner who can help with its recovery.
Mateus Magala emphasised that time is of the essence. It is necessary to act quickly and decisively to avoid collapse. The future of LAM and Tmcel is now at stake, and the coming weeks will be crucial. The impact on the Mozambican economy and the repercussions for workers and customers are incalculable.
The question arises: will LAM and Tmcel manage to avoid collapse? If so, what will the consequences be? The answer will determine the future of the transport and telecommunications sector in Mozambique. This is a chapter that all Mozambicans are following with apprehension. The clock does not stop and the nation awaits answers.
