On the 14th, Mozambique and India held a joint commission in Maputo to assess cooperation between the two countries. The commission was chaired by Mozambique's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, and co-chaired by India's Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
During the meeting, the two countries assessed the current state of bilateral cooperation and reviewed future activities, as well as evaluating the degree of implementation of the decisions taken at the last session, held in New Delhi in 2018.
The latest data show that in 2018 Mozambique and India reached about 1.7 million euros in trade, up from 1.5 million the previous year. In the first quarter of 2020, India was Mozambique's second-largest trading partner, just behind South Africa, in terms of both imports and exports, according to Mozambique's National Statistics Institute.
The main products India buys from Mozambique include coal, cashew nuts and beans. In addition, in 2021 the Government of India donated two military vessels to the Mozambican Government to reinforce operations against rebel groups in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.
The meeting took place as part of the strengthening and deepening of the existing relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
