Solidarity takes on real meaning when it is translated into concrete actions, close to people and with a lasting impact on the area. It was with this conviction that Baía Mall held the seventh edition of the project “Um Natal Cheio de Vida” (A Christmas Full of Life), its charity Christmas campaign, which in 2025 once again united the community, partners and public institutions around two fundamental pillars: social support and protection of the environment.

On 17 December, the Baía Mall team travelled to Macaneta Beach for a day marked by sharing, togetherness and environmental awareness. The initiative brought together some 130 members of the local community, mostly fishermen and farmers, as well as government representatives, shopping centre partners and Baía Mall staff. In an atmosphere of closeness and mutual respect, values such as unity, peace, care for nature and the importance of family were promoted, central elements of the Christmas spirit that the project seeks to preserve.

One of the most symbolic moments of this edition was the planting of 120 trees at Macaneta Primary School and the surrounding areas. The action symbolised life, renewal and commitment to the future. This gesture continues an environmental concern that Baía Mall has shown over the years; as early as 2021 it promoted the planting of 200 casuarinas and 20 almond trees in front of the shopping centre, contributing to the landscaping and environmental enhancement of the area around the mall. The first tree was planted by Lisié Champier, Baía Mall’s marketing manager and coordinator of the “Um Natal Cheio de Vida” project, accompanied by Jonace, a pupil at the local school and son of Dona Marta, a Macaneta fisherwoman. The gesture was followed by pupils, teachers and members of the community, in a collective involvement that reinforced the importance of environmental education and of preserving the beach, the natural heritage and the local culture. More than an isolated act, the planting became a moment of reflection and learning, allowing more direct contact with nature and with the country’s history, and raising awareness of the need to protect Mozambique and its natural resources, in particular the coastal areas, which are so sensitive and essential to the livelihoods of communities.

After this activity, the celebration continued with a Christmas lunch at the Lugar do Mar restaurant, prepared especially for 130 people from the Macaneta community. For many of those present, this was a new experience, lived with emotion, dignity and appreciation. The satisfaction of taking part in a moment designed exclusively for local families, couples and children, in a welcoming and respectful atmosphere, was evident. Baía Mall’s speeches focused on preserving nature, caring for the environment and the importance of cultivating relationships of closeness, respect and love for one’s neighbour. The cake-cutting was attended by Ana Paula Gonçalves, manager of Baía Mall, Manuel Langa, financial director, and the Governor of Maputo Province, reinforcing the institutional and symbolic character of the initiative.

The “Um Natal Cheio de Vida” campaign was made possible thanks to the support and trust of the partners involved. Baía Mall thanks its customers, who contributed donations, as well as Lugar do Mar, the Salvation Army, the Government of Maputo Province, the Municipality of Marracuene and Macaneta Beach, TVCABO, Cota Câmbios, Dino Bambino, Broll and the other partner organisations. Each contribution was decisive in making this Christmas brighter, more welcoming and more caring. The campaign closed on 20 December at Baía Mall, between 11am and 1pm, with the handover of the donations collected during the month. Approximately one tonne of food and non-perishable goods, clothing and footwear was distributed to the neediest families of Macaneta, the same ones who took part in the lunch and the planting, ensuring coherence, continuity and social impact for the initiative.
Since opening to the public in November 2017, Baía Mall has played an active role in promoting social and charitable campaigns. Over the years, it has stood out for its support to the victims of Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, its aid to refugees from Cabo Delgado, activities at hospitals, back-to-school campaigns, environmental initiatives and activities devoted to orphanages, care homes, national parks and vulnerable communities. The 2025 edition, with the Christmas lunch in Macaneta, the planting of 120 trees and the handover of donations, reinforces this consistent record of commitment to Mozambican society.

Taking advantage of the presence on the ground of the main figures involved in this edition, Xonguila spoke with Ana Paula Gonçalves, manager of Baía Mall, who looked back on 2025 and on the shopping centre’s journey. For her, Baía Mall has established itself as a benchmark on Mozambique’s retail scene, not only because of its size, but above all because of the quality of its retailers, the diversity of its offer and the close relationship it maintains with local communities.

According to Ana Paula Gonçalves, the centre’s performance is assessed through several complementary indicators, including the number of monthly visits, which already exceeds 370,000, the financial health of the retailers, security, cleanliness, the organisation of the space and the effectiveness of the campaigns run. To these are added technical criteria relating to maintenance and quality and safety standards, which are essential to ensuring a comfortable and reliable environment for those who visit Baía Mall. Ana Paula also stresses that the balance between management, retailers and visitors is a permanent challenge, requiring closeness, active listening and a deep knowledge of the urban and social context in which the centre sits. It was this continuous work that allowed Baía Mall to become ever more accessible and popular, without losing the coherence of its offer or its positioning as a benchmark venue in the capital. Looking to the future, Ana Paula Gonçalves says that Baía Mall is in a phase of consolidation, with little room for physical expansion but with great potential in terms of brand, quality of offer and social and cultural activity. For 2026, new promotional campaigns, cultural and artistic events, social and environmental responsibility initiatives, activities devoted to children, health and well-being, and a Christmas decoration inspired by Africa and its wildlife are planned. In a year marked by challenges but also by achievements, “Um Natal Cheio de Vida” stands as much more than a Christmas celebration. It is the expression of Baía Mall’s ongoing commitment to people, to the environment and to Mozambique, showing that solidarity, when lived consciously and shared, leaves real and lasting marks on the country’s present and future.
