The National Statistics Institute (INE) has recently shared encouraging news for Mozambicans: the weight that inflation has placed on our shoulders has been easing, and for the second consecutive month. The steady rise in prices, which has been part of our daily lives, slowed in October to a rate of 11.83%.

Since the start of the year, in February, prices have not stopped rising, reaching a worrying 12.96% in August. This figure, though still high, began to fall in September, standing at 12.71%, and continued to fall in October.

This decrease, though small, is the first time this year that prices have fallen two months in a row. As a result, cumulative inflation in our country so far stands at 8.8%.

It should be stressed that the way inflation is calculated has undergone some changes. The data for the calculation are now collected at eight points in our country. The cities of Quelimane, Tete, Chimoio and Xai-Xai and the province of Inhambane have joined Maputo, Beira and Nampula in contributing to this analysis.

According to the INE, transport, food and non-alcoholic beverages are chiefly responsible for the rise in prices. Stay informed and aware of these fluctuations to better manage your budget. Together, we can navigate these choppy economic waters.
