Under the Local Development Agreements (ADL), throughout 2021, Sasol delivered several water supply infrastructures to the communities of Govuro and Inhassoro. These comprise 51 water supply boreholes that were rehabilitated and another 10 built from scratch. Of this batch, 42 benefit communities in Inhassoro District and 19 those in Govuro District, in northern Inhambane.
For 2022, Sasol has an ambitious plan, which includes building supply systems that will provide the precious liquid to the schools and health units of the Inhassoro and Govuro Districts. The supply systems consist of boreholes, reservoirs and distribution networks. Once abstracted, the water will be treated and stored in reservoirs that feed a distribution network.
This semester, Sasol and ENH (Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos) will deliver a flagship project – the so-called Inhassoro Water Supply System – which will benefit more than 21,000 people, with some 2,000 household connections planned, in line with the government's Water for Life initiative (Pravida). This project will increase access to water supply services, which will help reduce diseases resulting from the consumption of unsafe water.
Communities define investment priorities
Community involvement in the management and monitoring of these projects is of the utmost importance to ensure their sustainability. In the consultation carried out, the communities and the district governments indicated that the number one priority is related to water.
Sasol, through its implementation partner, SNV, has been building the capacity of the communities in order to prepare them to manage the water supply systems. As part of this project, the Governments of the two districts each received a vehicle, for technical assistance to the communities.

The Local Development Agreements (ADL) set out the priorities for funding development projects, based on the Corporate Social Responsibility Policy for the Extractive Industry, and were signed in September 2019 with the Governments of the Districts of Govuro and Inhassoro and 37 local communities.
