Soul

Soul is the latest gem from Disney-Pixar. It tells the story of Joe (Jamie Foxx), an aspiring jazz musician who teaches music education as a means of earning a living. One day, on the verge of a great career opportunity that would allow him to fulfil his greatest dreams, Joe dies and is transported to the beyond. With the support of 22 (Tina Fey), a soul who has no interest in incarnating, the protagonist will try to return to Earth, embarking on an incredible adventure of learning and discovery that he had not been able to have during his life. At the same time, Joe desperately tries to show 22 what is good about living.

This animated feature, after being removed from the cinema release schedule in 2020 owing to the covid-19 pandemic, premiered last December on the online streaming platform Disney+.

Directed by Pete Docter and Kemp Powers, the film explores light and colour in a singular way, and is rich in technical details that heighten our feelings as we watch it. Another excellent component is the soundtrack, with jazz sounds composed by Jon Batiste and other musical themes different from those Disney has accustomed us to. All of the voice work is truly noteworthy. The original version of the film also features names such as Daveed Diggs, Angela Bassett, Alice Braga and Graham Norton, among others.

All these ingredients make Soul (Soul – Uma Aventura com Alma, in the Portuguese version) a work that is light and at the same time profound, which makes us reflect on the world and the way we live our lives.
