Talking about retirement is still taboo

In Mozambique, few people take the subject of retirement seriously. Many trust that the INSS (the national social security institute) will be enough to guarantee financial peace of mind in old age. In reality, that trust can be risky.

• The system depends on contributions from active workers.
• The value of the future pension is tied to the state of the economy and the number of active contributors.
• This means there are no solid guarantees for the future.
Relying on social security alone is an uncertain bet. Long-term planning has stopped being a luxury and become a necessity.
How the current system works (INSS/INPS)

• Compulsory for formal-sector workers.

• Optional, but recommended, for informal workers.
• The pension amount depends on the length of time and the amount of contributions.
• In most cases, it does not fully cover expenses in retirement.
• The rules are set out in Decree 51/2017 of 9 October.
Think carefully: if you stopped working today, could you maintain your lifestyle on the pension alone?

Alternatives and supplements

Relying on a single source is risky. There are several ways to supplement social security:
• Private pension funds - They allow additional contributions and, in some cases, financial participation from the employer.
• Voluntary contributions - Useful for self-employed or informal workers who want to secure a more stable future.
• Long-term savings and investments - Term deposits, life insurance with a savings component, or treasury bonds with maturities of between 5 and 10 years.
Example: monthly savings of 2,000 MZN over 20 years, at an average rate of 6% a year, can generate a significant supplement to the public pension.

Practical steps to get started
1. Set your goal - Decide how much you would like to receive each month after retirement.
2. Work out how much you need to save now - Use simple tools or ask a financial specialist for help.
3. Choose the best strategy - You can combine INSS, private funds and long-term savings.
4. Review the plan regularly - Every 2–3 years, adjust the plan as your financial situation changes.
The earlier you start, the greater the positive impact of time and financial discipline.

The role of companies

Employers have a crucial role in building a more stable future for workers:
• Ensure that INSS contributions are correctly paid in.
• Offer supplementary contributions to private funds (even 5–10% makes a difference).
• Promote financial literacy programmes in the workplace.
• Encourage temporary or informal workers to join voluntary savings schemes.
Companies that support their employees in preparing for retirement create more motivated, loyal and productive teams.

Clear benefits for everyone

For workers:
• Greater financial security in the future
• Less stress and more control over their lives
• The ability to make decisions with confidence

For companies:

• Fewer requests for salary advances
• More focused and relaxed employees
• A stronger image as a responsible employer

The decision is in your hands
Planning for retirement is an act of personal and collective responsibility. Starting early is the best way to secure financial independence in the future.
