Amina
Amina is a feature film inspired by the story of a Nigerian warrior queen. It is a perspective on crucial events in African history that are little known to the general public and generally ignored by the Hollywood film industry.
In real life, the queen lived between about 1533 and 1610, and to this day is considered one of the most important historical figures in Africa, immortalised in countless cultural representations. She is characterised as a powerful leader, at a time when women had few opportunities to stand out as rulers. She received military training to learn to fight with swords alongside the male soldiers of her kingdom, and during the period in which she ruled she took part in several wars, conquering various regions, expanding her territory and creating trade routes across North Africa.
"Amina, a feature film inspired by the story of a strong woman prepared to do anything to protect her people"
The film is directed by Izu Ojukwu and Okechukwu Ogunjiofor, was shot in Nigeria and had post-production carried out in several European countries. The cast includes Lucy Ameh in the lead role, Clarion Chukwurah, Ali Nuhu and Magaji Mijinyawa. Netflix acquired the streaming rights to the film, which has been available on the platform since the beginning of November. Being able to watch, without leaving home, films from countries that are normally outside the commercial cinema circuit is one of the great advantages that streaming platforms have offered in recent years. They contribute to globalisation and to knowledge of other cultures.
If you like epic films based on impressive true stories, Amina is a good bet.
